BIRDWATCHING IN KENYA

November 30th, 2007 admin Posted in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Birdwatching in Kenya is as good as it gets. Not only are about half of Africa’s birds represented in Kenya, but the record-breaking lists of birds seen attests to the excellent value of birdwatching in kenya. One example is the world record for the most birds seen in 24hrs - 342 bird species.

For birdwatching there are numerous sites that one can choose to visit in kenya located in diverse habitats -cool alpine zones, papyrus swamps, simmering hot soda pans, tussock grasslands, desert scrub and sand dunes.Normaly the maximum number of species available in Kenya falls in the period mid-October until mid-December when hordes of migrant birds from the palaearctic are moving southwards.February and March sees lesser numbers moving northwards after the period of mortality for the younger birds on their wintering ground.

During the long rains,April into the beginning of May,naturally a vast majority of the palaearctics will already have left, but the rains bring Afrotropical birds into breeding activity and normally secrative species can be more obvious. The changing environment brings about large movements of African species as they seek to temporarily colonise the new habitats available.

So whether you are looking forward to thousands of waders at mida creek, flamingo spectacle at lake Nakuru,Hunter’s Cisticola in the Aberdare Mountains or Great blue Turacos in Kakamega Forest the excitement of your first local bird will remain unabated as you find birds wherever you travel.Bearing in mind, its not unusual for a bird group to see 300-600 species on a tour or more than 120 at a site in a single day.

With the most spectacular scenery and abundance of animals in these two parks, it becomes obvious why Kenya attracts so many visitors.
Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara offer a great variety of Kenyan wildlife and culture. Maasai Mara is home to the distinctive Maasai tribe who famously dress in bright red with colourful jewellery made from beads. Their deep-routed culture that has stayed the same for hundreds of years has made the Maasai people world-renowned. Lake Nakuru is famous for having many rhinos and for its flamingos covering the lake like a pink blanket.
